Lloyd’s of London
Lloyd’s of London: the world’s leading insurance market.
We are proud to have Lloyd’s of London as a primary insurer for many of the international insurance coverages we offer. Today Lloyd’s of London is the world’s leading insurance market, housed in an award-winning modern building in Lime Street in the City of London. Its origins, however, lay in the more modest surroundings of a 17th century coffee house.
In the 17th Century London’s importance as a trade center led to an increasing demand for ship and cargo insurance. From its first beginnings in Edward Lloyd’s Coffee House in 1688, Lloyd’s has been a pioneer in insurance. Starting with its roots in marine insurance, Lloyd’s has grown over 300 years to become the world’s leading market for specialist insurance. The Lloyd’s Home Office seen below is a global architectural wonder.
From 17th century shipping and Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, through the devastation of the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, and on to the emergence of space satellite technology in the late 20th century, the story of Lloyd’s is both a long and an interesting one.
Lloyd’s of London is an insurance market, not a single insurance company. It consists of a number of separate businesses (syndicates) that underwrite risks on a shared but competitive basis. Business is brought to these syndicates by a worldwide network of brokers working with Lloyd’s brokers based in London.
All USA business underwritten at Lloyd’s must be placed in accordance with US regulatory requirements. Coverage must comply with local law.
Lloyd’s underwriters are also accredited reinsurers in all states. Insurance policies issued by underwriters are not protected or guaranteed by state insurance guaranty associations or insolvency funds, except in states where licensed.
